I banned instant messaging from Dial 800 many years ago when it first came out. Initially, I thought it was the most incredible idea that everybody could instantly message others whenever needed. What I learned is that in business, it is critical to focus and instant messaging is a huge distraction. A business person that focuses on their work without distraction will get more done. While instant messaging has its place, if you want your business to grow and be successful, you need to enable your employees to focus. In business, instant messaging should not be the primary form of communication. Knowing where and when in business to use instant messaging is an important discipline that needs to be established by all businesses.
