They become BAD when you lose balance, or they become rote. When building your empire takes over your life—consuming every moment of your day and night—it’s no longer good.
Of course, there are times when you’ll need to sprint and pull some all-nighters, but not 7 days a week, 12 hours a day!
Who suffers? The most important people in your life (read: your spouse or family). Reaching the top alone will not bring you lasting joy or happiness.
What else suffers? Your spirit. We all need time to nurture our connection to something greater.
Your body also pays the price. Carrying extra weight, living with constant stress, and being out of shape are not recipes for a long, energetic, or fulfilling life.
Now, let me be clear: building a great company doesn’t have to mean your relationships, soul, and body will suffer. But losing balance is easy, and you won’t find happiness at the top of the mountain when it happens.
Why do so many lose their balance? Because building a great company can be intoxicating—think power, money, and prestige. It feels good when people look up to you.
When Good Habits Become Rote
Good habits lose their power when they become automatic and lack meaning. For instance, learning something positive every morning is a great habit.
But you've missed the point if you’re going through the motions without reflecting, internalizing, and applying what you know. This can happen easily, even with the best intentions. That’s why it's essential to pause, reflect, and deeply appreciate what you’re doing.
Be intentional. Be thankful—so that your good habits remain meaningful and impactful.
