To Scale Your Business Work ON, Not IN it

Updated: Jul 24

When I was CEO of Dial 800, we tripled our sales and had a significant exit in 2017 after I eventually hired a coach and learned how to work on my business, not in the business. Many entrepreneurs like me work really hard and spend a lot of time selling, doing deals, collecting money, and doing all the things that we need to do to run a business.

But at some point, when you get to 10 people to 250 people, you have a senior leadership team, and you say, I want to take this to the next level; you need structure and organization. It's like building a house without a blueprint; you need a blueprint.

And there are 9 Core Competencies that you must master to scale your business. Things like having a set of core values and having 90-day goals that you all are clear on. Those are subsets of the one-year and three-year goals. And as Jim Collins in Good to Great says A B hag. What is your big, hairy, audacious goal? What is your vision for your company? Why do we exist? Who are the best customers that we want to serve? How to have amazing meetings, and how to hire people, get them on the bus, get them in the right seats, and be highly productive and love working for your company.

All of that takes competencies. There are nine of them, and you can learn them. When you apply them, you, too, can scale your business with success. I'll meet you at the top. It's Scott. Thank you so much for listening.
